The Balmy Air of
Harrogate
|
|
|
If you should go to Harrogate by any turn of luck,
I'm sure, as you look round the place you're certain to be
struck,
They're such a handsome sort of folk parading every street,
It's quite a change from all the usual people that you meet.
I wondered why, although I seldom quiz,
Now I have found out what the secret is -
Chorus.
It's the air, the air, the balmy air of Harrogate,
Nothing else is like it, so they say,
It makes an old 'un feel he's young,
Makes a Nagger hold her tongue,
Makes the flapper want to flap all day.
Young couples stay out late,
They linger round the gate,
Though Mother calls "Come in" they never care
It's a germ, you may be bound,
That is only to be found
In the "Come and cuddle me" Harrogate air.
You may require, at Harrogate, some purchases to make,
A toddle round to see the shops you'll very likely take,
There's every kind of merchandise to tempt the watchful eye,
You won't go very far before you'll find you're forced to buy.
Why do you, here, of all the spots on earth,
Pay twice as much as what a thing is worth ?
Chorus.
It's the air, the air, the balmy air of Harrogate,
Everyone is out to make a bit,
The shops you'll find are not content
Unless they're making cent per cent.
At bleeding you they're absolutely "It"
I'd never be surprised If the fish shop advertised
"Prime Kippers only 3/6 a pair,"
For they simply take the bun,
And you'll find you're always done
In the "It's your money we want" Harrogate air.
It's said the girls of Harrogate are nowhere else excelled,
They make a boast for many years they have the biscuit held,
They're rather prepossessing, I must candidly confess,
But owe a deal of their success to what they spend on dress ;
But seeing what a lot of clothing's bought,
Why is it that the skirts are worn so short ?
Chorus.
It's the air, the air, the balmy air of Harrogate,
No matter if the day be cold or warm,
The eyes of all the watchful "Hims"
Observe the shapely nether limbs,
It must be they are simply showing "Form"
When a breeze begins to blow
It's an interesting show,
Entertainment free in every thoroughfare,
Why they do it, goodness knows,
It's a microbe, I suppose,
In the "Chase me Charley" Harrogate air.
