In addition to those who come in search of cure, it must not be
forgotten that pleasant pastimes are equally essential to those
who "enjoy" life. In the summer there is excellent
fishing on the Wharfe and Nidd ; in the winter, " the mighty
Nimrod" will find the Bramham Moor and York and Ainsty
foxhounds within rideable distance, two days a week, and by
train on others.
A new golf-course of 18 holes, with an excellent club-house, is
now to be found at Starbeck, and it is only those who
"do" a round who can speak joyfully of the increased
vigour which one feels after it.
There is a good gentlemen's club, and clubs Conservative and
Radical; a theatre, the Spa concert rooms and gardens, where, in
the season, the ear is charmed and the mind soothed by the strains
of an excellent band: there are also lovely drives, in a most
interesting country.
