Private Charles Benson

Roll of Honour

A letter from the Sister in charge of XI CCS, France, conveys the sad news of the death of Private Charles Benson, DLI, son of Mr & Mrs Charles Benson, Finkle Street, Knaresborough, and brother of Mrs Milnes, 10 Dragon View, Harrogate, and Mrs William Bushby, Montrose, Vernon Road, Harrogate. 

The writer says : "He was admitted here on the 15th at 7pm with a severe penetrating wound of the abdomen, with internal injury. Everything possible was done for him, but he passed away at noon on the 16th. He did not realise how ill he was, but I knew I should be wring to you, and sent his love, He was unconscious some time before the end, which was very peaceful. He will be laid to rest in the cemetery here by the side of his comrades. Please accept my sympathy in your trouble". 

Private Benson first joined the Northumberland Fusiliers, but was transferred to the DLI after reaching France.
