Private James Grafton

Harrogate Herald - 1st August 1917

Roll of Honour

James Grafton, 1 Upper Denmark Street, Harrogate, has received information that his nephew, Private James Grafton, West Yorks Regt, died from wounds received in the gas attack on the 25th July in the Canadian Hospital, France. He had served over 10 years in His Majesty's Forces in India, Malta and France. He was twice wounded previously, and for a time was engaged in conveying the wounded from ships to hospitals at Malta and then drafted out to France again, where he met his death. His time was about up when the war broke out. A pathetic interest attaches to a letter from the deceased which arrived the day after the telegram reporting his death. In it he says : "My cousin, Willie Grafton, is in my platoon, and will be a bit of company for me".
