I was extremely pleased to receive a call from Private Jenkinson, who is hole on leave for a week. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Jenkinson, of Spofforth, and has been five years in the Regular Army. Jenkinson is in tip-top form, and I'm sure the Spofforth folk must be proud of him. He arrived at Southampton on Tuesday and was to return today. You will perhaps remember that he was wounded on the 25th of September, 1914, but is all right now. Since then he has only been in hospital with trouble from his feet, and that was but for a short time. Private Jenkinson is one of those unfortunate boys who are in regiments by themselves. That is to say, without a lad from home to pal with. He did meet Corporal Shoeing-Smith Foreman, of Bilton, likewise his cousin, Sergeant Major Gaythorpe, of Wetherby, who, by the way, is at home on a month's furlough. You see, he has finished his term of service, but as he is Royal Engineers-enlisting he gets a month's extra leave. I am sure Wetherby should swell with pride that they have a man who, after having served a long time in the Regular Army and throughout this war thus far, has the patriotic spirit to enlist for further arduous duties. All honour to Gaythorpe. I shall feel a real personal interest in Private Jenkinson, now that I have seen him. I trust he will have the best of fortune in the future, and that after the war he will return home to us once more safe and sound.
