Rifleman R S Pott writes : 

Just a line or two to thank you for the paper that I have received every week. I am writing this in the trenches - a nice place to spend Xmas; but when we know that we are not forgotten at home, it goes long way to keep one's spirits up. I don' think we will be so long before we are all back home in the good old town. I am waiting my turn to come home on leave, and I will call in to see you. I see you have sent the parcel out. I have not received it yet, but I expect it will be here before long. I will let you know as soon as I receive it. I am sure I don't know how to thank you for your kindness. I am sure I don't know what you will think of me asking for so much, but if only I could see you to have a talk with you I could tell you what we are doing and what we have gone through. We have had a rough time since we came out, and that is the best part of twelve months. I am one of the lucky ones that are left of the old lot. You will know that F Allan was out here with me, and I was with him at the time he was wounded. I myself had a near "do". I got a bit of shrapnel just under the left eye. I hope he is getting well, as I really thought he would lose his leg. I have not heard from him, but perhaps he does not know I am back with the same battalion. I will have to close, as I am just going on periscope for an hour; so I wish you and all my friends a merry Xmas.
