The Harrogate Dog Show

I'm awfully fond of animals, my parents were as well,
(And the way they brought me up's a proof of that )
I think the Dog, as friend of man, has not a parallel,
He gives an easy beating to the cat ;
To see him at his best you ought to go
To Harrogate, and visit their Dog Show

O, you ought to see the bow–wows at the Dog Show,
It's a sight you shouldn't miss, if you've the chance,
Dogs in great variety
Among the best society,
All, you'll find, will well repay a glance;
Though some, you'd think, at auction, wouldn't fetch a single bid,
If you believe their owners they are worth a hundred quid -
If you're looking out for swankers you are on safe ground,
At the Harrogate Dog Show they'll be found.

It's pretty to see exhibitors attending to their pets,
They are brushed and combed and decked with lovely bows,
Such polishing, perfuming too, that every doggie gets
From his tail–end to his precious little nose ;
Many children would be happy I will swear,
If they only had a fraction of the care.

And hear them bark from tenor down to bass,
The sights are often humorous,
The types are very numerous,
And dogginess prevails throughout the place.
The exhibitors are dogs as well, you're often in a fog
For it's hard to tell at first which is the owner which the dog
If you want to see some funny faces, I'll be bound
At the Harrogate Dog Show they'll be found.

It's awfully interesting when the dogs are being judged,
And they're strutting around and showing off their points,
You'll always find no pains are by competitors begrudged,
They trot 'em along and exercise their joints ;
When owners find they haven't got a prize,
They can use some lovely language, bless their eyes –

They are there in all varieties and tints,
Dogs of youth and purity,
And dogs who've reached maturity,
And dogs with scents as strong as peppermints ;
And the optimistic owners are an interesting sight,
Like the dogs, – if you upset them, they delight to bark and bite,
But as sports you cannot beat them, you are on safe ground,
