Private Joseph Bailey

Claro Times - 19th November 1915

Mrs Bailey, 20 South Beech Avenue, Starbeck, has received official news that her son, Private J Bailey, has been dangerously wounded, on the 11th November, in the Dardanelles. Private Bailey enlisted in the West Yorks Regiment soon after the outbreak of the war, and went to the Dardanelles about two months ago.

Harrogate Herald - 24th November 1915

W H Breare letter

Mrs Bailey, of Starbeck, has received news of the death of her son, Private J Bailey. We gave his portrait last week as being wounded. Prior to enlistment he was employed by Mr J Lockwood, the marine store dealer, Starbeck. You would see from his photograph what a fine character he was. I deeply regret his death. Starbeck has, unfortunately, lost many boys in the war. Last week it was Neil McMillan, now it is Bailey.

Harrogate Herald - 8th December 1915

Gunner G Elsworth says :

November 27th, 1915. just a few lines thanking you for the Harrogate paper, also for inserting my letter in you paper appealing for a melodeon, which I have received all right. It is a little beauty, and I am sure it was very good of Mrs Cooper to send it to me. I have written and thanked her for it. We are set up now for our sing-songs at nights. We have had a bit of snow here yesterday, the 26th, but it was not much. We are having some very keen frost at nights, which make it bad for travelling. It is colder here than I have ever felt it in Harrogate, but I think we can stand it all right. I was sorry to read about J Bailey dying of wounds. I knew him very well, but I am sure that his parents will be glad to think that he died for his country. I expect there won't be many chaps left in Harrogate now; it is time they made them join. It will just do a lot of them good to get out here a little bit. Well, I have not much to say this time, so I will close. Wishing you and your paper every success.
