Harrogate Herald - 10th January 1917
Writing to his mother at Regent House, Starbeck, Edgar
Barnes hopes a parcel gone astray has reached someone else, but
hopes for another just to see if one can get through to him. He adds
:
Most of our other chaps seem to have got their
parcels, etc., all right, but perhaps he will roll up some day with
a bit of luck. Well, I hope you all had a happy Christmas, etc., as
I might say we had a pretty good do out here, considering, with
roast beef and vegetables along with the the things to make up a
three-course dinner, then finish up with bags of free beer, just to
make the chaps in a bit of a singing mood for a concert at night.
You may guess things were pretty lively for a day or two. Well, I
must say I think the paper takes a long tome to land now. It only
arrives about once a month. It is a pleasant pastime reading about
the local things and the exemption cases. Well, mother, I think I
have made up a pretty good letter this time, so I hope you will
write again soon and please don't forget the paper. So I think I
must close now, wishing all a happy and prosperous New Year.
