Roll of Honour
A letter from the Sister in charge of XI CCS, France, conveys the
sad news of the death of Private Charles Benson, DLI, son of
Mr
& Mrs Charles Benson, Finkle Street, Knaresborough, and brother
of Mrs Milnes, 10 Dragon View, Harrogate, and Mrs William Bushby,

The writer says : "He was
admitted here on the 15th at 7pm with a severe penetrating wound of
the abdomen, with internal injury. Everything possible was done for
him, but he passed away at noon on the 16th. He did not realise how
ill he was, but I knew I should be wring to you, and sent his love,
He was unconscious some time before the end, which was very
peaceful. He will be laid to rest in the cemetery here by the side
of his comrades. Please accept my sympathy in your trouble".
Private Benson first joined the Northumberland Fusiliers, but was
transferred to the DLI after reaching France.
