Claro Times – 6th March 1915
We are pleased to learn the Sergeant G Brown, of
Cheapside, Knaresborough, has been promoted Company
Quartermaster-Sergeant in the 2/5th West Yorks, and is at present
engaged in trench duty on the coast. He has seven years' service in
the Territorials. After enlisting as a Private, his first
appointment was as cook to the 5th West Yorks, and after passing a
course of examination at Aldershot, was promoted Sergeant Master
Cook, which he has been for the past five years. Quartermaster-Sergeant
Brown was with a company at Redcar, and witnessed the
bombardment of the Hartlepools, the flash of the guns on the German
war vessels being distinctly visible from the Yorkshire seaside
resort.
