Harrogate Herald – 29th January 1919
Writing from Germany on December 26th, 1918, Sapper W D
Calvert says :
It has been quite an interesting track through a portion of
France and Southern Belgium. The majority of our journey has been
through the Ardennes, which, as you know, are very hilly and well
wooded – rather stiff for a track – nevertheless the scenery is
really very fine and an agreeable change from the destruction of war
now far behind us. At present we are in the village of Erp, about 16
miles SW of Cologne. The German people so far have treated us with
every respect and seem quite eager to help us in any way, - maybe
from fear but I hardly think so.
