Photo The above is a photograph of Private
William Cartwright, of the York and Lancaster Regiment , who
died in hospital from wounds received in action, and whose widow
resides at 11 Albert Street, Harrogate, he was a Reservist, served
some years in India, and was called up on the outbreak of war. He
passed through the most severe engagements, yet his letters were
always cheerful. He was struck in the arm one day by shrapnel, the
bone being very badly broken. On reaching hospital the bone was
carefully set, and he appeared to be doing well. A few days after,
however, severe haemorrhage occurred, from which he never rallied,
and passed away. He was buried in the little cemetery at
Boisguillaune with full military honours, the funeral being attended
by both French and British troops.
