Second Lieutenant John Collinge Chadwick, West Yorks
Regiment (Leeds Rifles), who was killed on March 25th, was born in
1879. He was the youngest son of the late William Chadwick, of Leeds
and Harrogate, and was educated at Rossall, and afterwards became a
director in the firm of Messrs Chadwick Bros., cloth manufacturers
of Leeds. he enlisted at the Inns of Court OTC, and after training
at Berkhamstead and the Curragh, was given his commission in July,
1916. He went to the front on September 22nd the same year. He
married in June, 1908, Alice Fowler, daughter of the late John Wilfred
Fowler, of Harrogate, who, with two children, survives him.
His General writes as follows :
He was a very
gallant officer and a fine leader. He had gained a great reputation
in his battalion, and his commanding officer considered him a very
resourceful and capable officer. In addition to this he was much
beloved by his brother officers and by his men. I feel that the
Division has suffered a serious loss by his death.
