Wednesday Gossip
There was a solemn dedication by the Vicar of St Luke's of a
solid silver pence box as a war memorial to the members of the
Harrogate Branch of the United Kingdom Commercial Travellers'
Association at the George Hotel on Saturday night. The names of the
fallen on the urn were Second Lieutenant A L Gibson and Gunner
J Clelland, both of whom were members, and among the names of
the 22 members who served were those of the Hon. E Wood, MP,
and Major A B Boyd Carpenter, MP, who are vice-presidents. In
dedicating the urn, the Rev S T Dawson, who was subsequently
referred to as their "chaplain", attributed the qualities
of courage, sympathy, and self-sacrifice to the memorial which is to
receive "pence" for the support of the Association's
charitable work. On the urn was inscribed the words –
"Schools and Benevolent Pence Box, UKCTS, Harrogate
Branch".
