Harrogate Herald - 3rd October 1917
Roll of Honour
The sad news of the death of her son, P Duncan, has been conveyed
to Mrs Duncan, 9 Coronation Avenue, Oatlands Mount, Harrogate, in
some letters from his officers, the chaplain stating that he was
killed instantly on the 14th August whilst in the performance of his
duty as sentry in the front trench. Some shells came over, killing
Duncan and wounding five others. He had no pain or lingering death,
as he was wounded badly in the head. The officers and men of the
battalion sent their sympathy. He was buried in a cemetery behind
the lines, and a cross has been erected. His second lieutenant, in a
letter expressing deepest sympathy, says : "It is a great
sacrifice which the brave women of England are making daily, and I
am sure your son behaved most gallantly and received his death blow
standing at his post".
