Roll of Honour
Second Lieutenant Richard de Paiva Eddison (Loyal
North Lancashire Regiment), elder son of J Arthur Eddison,
solicitor, and Mrs Eddison, Langcliffe Avenue, Harrogate, was killed
in action on August 4th. He was the eldest grandchild of the late Dr
& Mrs Veale, of Roxburgh House, Harrogate. He was born at
Knaresborough in 1897, and was educated at Bilton Grange, near
Harrogate, Rugby, and Wellington College. On leaving school he was
granted a commission, and went to the Front in February last.
The Times report on the engagement says : The brunt
of this later fighting has been largely borne by troops of the
Lancashire Fusiliers and the Loyal North Lancashires, and the losses
they have inflicted on the enemy have been, without exaggeration
enormous. Airman, who are the best authorities report that they have
never seen the ground so strewn and heaped with German dead as that
battlefield.
