Roll of Honour
Official news has been received that Private
George Fisher, husband of Mrs Fisher, Sandy Bank, Pannal, and
son of Mr & Mrs James Fisher, of Silsden, was killed in action
on August 29th. He enlisted in June of last year in the Royal
Engineers, and was afterwards transferred to the Durham Light
Infantry and went to France December 23rd, 1916. The chaplain says :
"I buried him on August 31st in the cemetery at Villers-Fancon,
where his grave will be carefully tended and preserved. Your husband
was very popular with his officers and comrades, and they all desire
to send you their sincere sympathy in your sad bereavement. Your
husband was a good soldier and loyal friend, and all who knew him
here grieve with you".
Mrs Fisher also lost her only son, Private Ernest Rathmell, at
the Dardanelles. He enlisted August 14th, 1914, and was killed
August 21st, 1915. Private G Fisher was one of three sons serving
with His Majesty's Forces.
