Harrogate Herald - 31st October 1917
Roll of Honour
Mrs Abell, of Knaresborough, has received the following letter
from Captain Cecil Foster respecting her son, Trooper Arthur
Leonard Abell (Yorks Hussars), and dated October 13th, 1917 : Dear
Mrs Abell, I have to give you the very sad news that your son,
Private A L Abell, was killed in action on the morning of October
9th in the course of an attack on the German trenches. He was blown
up by a shell and was killed instantaneously. He was one of many
volunteers to go up for this attack, and it may be some consolation
to you to know that he died a hero in the thick of the fighting. I
have known your son nearly all the time he has been in the regiment,
and we shall all miss him very much, as he was such a cheery good
fellow and popular with everyone. Our deepest sympathy goes out to
you in your great loss. May it be some consolation to you to know
that he was not called upon to suffer any pain.
