Harrogate Herald - 28th November 1917
Roll of Honour
Pioneer George Furby (Special Brigade, Royal Engineers), whose
home was at Silverdale, 29 Albany Road, Bilton, Harrogate, was
killed in action on October 16th near St Julien. He was 29 years of
age, and son-in-law of Mr & Mrs C F Bruce, Silverdale, Masham.
Before enlisting he was employed at Messrs Taylor's Drug Stores,
Station Parade, Harrogate. His officer writing to Mrs Furby, says :
" It may be some slight consolation to you to know that he died
doing his duty nobly, as he always did, and that he died without
pain, for his death was instantaneous. We feel his loss greatly, and
I cannot say how sorry I am personally, for I was his section
officer. He was doing splendidly, and amongst his comrades was a
most popular man. Please accept our deepest sympathy, and may God
comfort and console you in the loss of your brave husband".
