Harrogate Herald - 28th March 1917
The following are men who have sent us the Army
post-card briefly stating that they are well and have received
papers and parcels, or whose letters contain views that have
repeatedly been expressed by other correspondents, but show their
friends that they are all right :

Harrogate Herald - 18th July 1917
July 2nd, killed in action, Gunner Ernest J
Harland, Royal Field Artillery, aged 34 years, dearly beloved
son of Mr and Mrs E Harland, 66 Stonefall Avenue, Starbeck,

Harrogate Herald - 18th July 1917
Gunner Ernest J Harland, 61 Stonefall Avenue,
[There is no 61 - Suspect this should be Edmund Harland, 66
Stonefall Avenue] Starbeck, second son of Mr and Mrs E J Harland,
has been killed in action. He had been in the employ of Leeds
Co-operative Society 19 years, the last two as manager at the
Horsforth Drapery Stores. His officer, writing to his mother, says
:
"Dear Mrs Harland, As your son's
officer, but more by far, I hope, his friend, may I be allowed to
express my profound and heartfelt sympathy at your son's death. I
feel his loss far more than I can adequately express. All his pals
loved him and I admired his sterling qualities and steady habits,
his promptness and sense of duty under such terrible circumstances.
Our country claims the supreme sacrifice, and all out here are
willing to give that for those at home we all hold so dear in our
hearts. Time is the one and only healer for such a wound as you have
received, and sympathy but a sorry consoler; but deep down in your
heart below all your sorrow let there be a great motherly pride that
such a man as your son proved to be gave his all without a murmur of
complaint. If I am able to see my [ ] once more peace [ ] care to
write me will [ ] attention.
