Harrogate Herald - 7th November 1917
Roll of Honour
Private H Hayes, who was killed in action on October
9th, and worked a number of years at New Park Laundry, was the son
of Mrs Hayes, of Electric Avenue, New Park, Harrogate. He leaves a
widow and two children. He belonged to the Yorks and Lancs Regiment,
and joined March 1st last, having been in France only four months.
Private F Hayes, his brother, has been missing six months and
nothing has been heard of him yet. Any information would be welcomed
by his mother.
A comrade, Lance Corporal A V Wright, referring to
the former's death, says :
"Dear Mrs Hayes, I write these few
lines hoping this letter will not make you downhearted. I regret to
say that your husband got killed a few days ago, but he bore his
burden bravely. I can assure you that all the platoon sympathises
with you, but you must forget it was God's will. He was a very good
chap, and we all miss him. I hope you will bear the news bravely, as
he was buried all right. I write on behalf of the platoon that you
might make things as bright as possible". Sergeant R Aisnsley,
West Yorks Regt, brother-in-law of Private H Hayes, was gassed on
March 16th, 1917. Before enlisting he was employed at New Park
Laundry, Harrogate.
