Roll of Honour
We regret to announce that an official intimation has been
received of the death of Second Lieutenant J W S Hird, North
Staffordshire Regiment, who has died of wounds. He was the eldest
son of the late William Waistell Hird, of Middlesborough, and
of Mrs Hird, of Cleveland House, Cornwall Road, Harrogate. He
was home on leave not long ago, and afterwards went out to
Mesopotamia, where he was fatally wounded in the recent fighting. He
volunteered for service in September, 1914, and joined the Public
Schools Battalion, and was subsequently gazetted to a commission in
the North Staffordshire Regiment in the following year. He was
esteemed and very popular amongst his many Harrogate friends, who
will regret his demise, which is more sad owing to the fact that he
was engaged to Miss Parkins, of Crestcote, Harrogate, at the time of
his death.
