Harrogate Herald - 21st March 1917
The following are men who have sent us the Army
post-card briefly stating that they are well and have received
papers and parcels, or whose letters contain views that have
repeatedly been expressed by other correspondents, but show their
friends that they are all right :
Private J Holmes
Harrogate Herald - 4th April 1917
Private J Holmes writes :
Just a few lines to thank you kindly for the three
pairs of scissors which I received about a fortnight ago. We have
been rather busy of late and not had mush time for writing. I sent a
field card the day I received the parcel. Would you be so kind as to
thank Mrs Whewell, the kind donor, through your paper for me as
before? I am pleased to say I am keeping fit and well.

James Holmes says :
Just a few lines to let you know I received the
safety razor quite all right, for which I thank you and the lady
most heartily. I must ask you to excuse me not writing before, but
we have been kept going. I have not had time to write. I received it
a week ago, and have just got the opportunity to write you. The
weather here is beautiful now - real summer and a grand change to
what we have had in the past. hoping you are enjoying the best of
health and wishing your paper every success.
