Roll of Honour
Doctor W D Jefferson has received the
following telegram from the Admiralty : "Deeply regret to
inform you Lieutenant Ingleby S Jefferson killed in action
21st inst.; letter follows".
Lieutenant Ingleby Stuart Jefferson, RN, who was 24 years of age,
was educated at Aysgarth School, and received his early training for
the navy on 11 HMS Conway, passing out first. After two years at
Dartmouth he was for six months as cadet on HMS Cumberland, then
midshipman on HMS Shannon, and also HMS Duke of Edinburgh at
Alexandretta. He obtained the Humane Society's medal for saving a
sailor's life, and was made full lieutenant in 1915. He was a very
good all-round athlete, and played football in the navy team versus
the Army team at Queen's Club on March 7th, 1914. Much sympathy is
expressed throughout Ripon and district with Dr & Mrs Jefferson
in the great loss they have sustained.
