Harrogate Herald - 2nd January 1918
Roll of Honour
Private A D Kershaw (York and Lancs), son of
Mr and
Mrs Frank Kershaw, 8 Pearl Street, Starbeck, was reported missing
since October 9th, 1917, and the parents have now received the
following letter :
"Dear Madam, In reply to your letter dated
11/12/17, it is with deep regret that I write as follows. Private
Kershaw was acting as runner on the date you mention, and his unit
was making an attack on the enemy trenches. About 10am Private
Kershaw became slightly wounded in the head, and was on the way down
to the dressing station. He stopped on the way to take cover behind
a dugout, and at that moment a shell came and killed him instantly.
I did not obtain this information until some time after I reported
him missing, and I have informed the War Office accordingly. I wrote
to Private Kershaw's next-of-kin and told them this. I hope that in
due course you will be officially notified. Please convey to his
parents my sincerest sympathy, and tell them what a splendid man he
always was". The above letter was an answer to an enquiry made
by a lady on behalf of his parents. Previous to joining the Army he
was employed by Messrs Allen and Thompson, clothiers, Market Hall,
Harrogate. His brother, Private O Kershaw, of the Yorks Regiment,
has been twice wounded, and is now in hospital at Llanelly, South
Wales, suffering from dysentery.
