Roll of Honour
Private W H Knowles' platoon
commander, writing to his parents, says :
"Dear Mr & Mrs
Knowles and family, I have no doubt that you will have heard
officially that your son, Private Knowles, was killed in action on
October 9th. Being his platoon commander ever since he joined our
battalion, I should like to offer you my deepest sympathy and that
of all men of the platoon. I should like to add that I found in him
a stout and willing soldier, and at the time of his death he was in
charge of the platoon. Your son has made this great sacrifice, and
you are entering into it. May God comfort you with the assurance
that it is not in vain, but that life shall for others become richer
and better because of it. God be with you in your sorrow and
strengthen you".
