Private F G Lawn, with the Italian
Expeditionary Force, writes :
The crossing of the river Piave was a
most wonderful piece of RE skill, done under terrific shell fire, as
well as bombs from aeroplanes. The river is divided into several
streams, which were all to bridge over to get guns and transport
across to an island some four kilos by three, strongly held by the
Austrians, but British bulldog tenacity accomplished it with slight
casualties, and made the Austrian fly back for his own country. It
was a most rapid advance, and our troops, as well as the French,
American, and Italian forces, were close on his heels, all the time
making him leave all manner of transport and ordnance material
