Roll of Honour
Mr & Mrs W Steel,
of High Street, Boroughbridge, have received the sad news that their
third son, Corporal Harry Steel, of the Machine Gun Corps, has been
killed in action. He was severely wounded in the chest and abdomen
and only lived a few hours after being admitted into hospital at the
base. Before the war, Corporal Steel assisted his father in his
well-known business, and joined the 1/5th West Yorks (Territorials)
about four years ago. Mobilised at the outbreak of hostilities, he
has been abroad since April, 1915, only being transferred to the
Machine Gun Corps some time last year after being in the Machine Gun
Section in the West Yorks almost since mobilisation. Great sympathy
in the district is felt with Mr & Mrs Steel in heir sad loss.
They have a splendid record of fighting sons, all four of them
having seen active service, two of whom are now in the fighting
line, one in France and another at Salonica. It is only a few weeks
ago since the youngest son, after recovering from wounds received in
France, had been home for a short furlough prior to returning to
France. Mr & Mrs Steel's only daughter, who is a member of the
Boroughbridge VAD, is the wife of Second Lieutenant A Lucas,
of the Manchester Regiment, who went out with the West Yorks in
April, 1915, as sergeant, receiving his commission in France last
year.
