Lance Corporal G
Lund, whose mother resides in
Franklin Road, has been wounded in the head by shell fire at Neuve
Chapelle.
Claro Times - 4th June 1915
Lance Corporal G
Lund, of the Royal Engineers, son
of Mrs Lund, of 7 Franklin Road, Harrogate, who was wounded on the
head by shell fire at Neuve Chapelle, has now been reported dead by
the War Office, having died from his wounds. The King and Queen have
written to Mrs Lund expressing their sympathy with her in her
sorrow.
A comrade, writing to
Mrs Lund, says :
I don't
know whether I am doing right in writing to you or not, but you must
have the sad news sooner or later. Poor George has died a noble
death, and you must feel proud of such a son. He has gone where a
great many more have for the same cause. I shall never get another
chum like him. I cannot settle down to soldiering at all now. I
know, Mrs Lund, you will miss him, but you will not miss him more
than I do. We have got lots of burial grounds round this part; some
graves have got 30 and 40 bodies in, but a lot contain just one or
two. Your son has a grave to himself, so anything you wish doing to
it I will be only too pleased to do it for you. We have had another
big battle since Neuve Chapelle, but we did not lose near so many.
If you could manage to get over here to see his grave, or if you
wish to come out after the war, if God spares me, I shall be only
too pleased to meet you and take you to his grave. I know you would
like to see where he is buried, but you must rest assured that while
I am within ?????? or walking distance of his grave, it will be well
looked after, and want for nothing".
