Harrogate Herald - 22nd August 1917
Roll of Honour
Letters from his officer convey the sad news of the
death of Private Alfred Naiff (West Yorks), who leaves a wife
and one child. He was killed in action on August 10th. He is the
son-in-law of Mr & Mrs Metcalfe, of 34 Chatsworth Place,
Harrogate.
His major says : Please accept on behalf of the
officers, NCOs, and men of his company their heartfelt sympathy with
you in your sad bereavement. Your husband, I may add, was well
respected by all ranks with whom he came in contact, and his loss to
the company is greatly felt. I was your husband's company
sergeant-major, and always found him a good and willing soldier.
His captain writes : There will be no consolation in
your great grief yet, I know, except your pride that your husband
died fighting; and your little girl, too, will live to be proud that
her father died a soldier. He was always a good lad and never failed
in his duty, and he has at last paid the great price.
