Harrogate Herald - 21st November 1917
Letters
Corporal W Prentice writes :
Thanks so much for sending me the paper. I had
charge of a party carrying rations up the line. Everything went well
until I was just about to enter the trench , when Fritz must have
seen us. However, I had got my men into safety when he gave us a
little "iron rations". I think you will know what they
are. I got the rations delivered and back into our billets, so you
can guess that I enjoyed laying on my bed having a cigarette and
reading the paper. It was as good as a meal. We see plenty of
gardens here, but they have all been broken and battered about; no
one can realise what it is like unless they see it in reality. I
expect all will be left after this war, then Cook's, the tourist
people, will be making a fortune out of it. I only hope the war will
end.

Expressing thanks for the Harrogate Herald, Corporal W Prentice
says :
As noticed the small paragraph where you had me down as
killed. I am pleased to see that it has been rectified. We are in a
little place called Marbaix, which is on the main road between
Landrecies and Avenes. I have been through Tasniers many times. I
saw in your paper there were some Harrogate lads there, but up to
now I have not come across any. The country round here looks very
nice – more like England.
