Writing on his experience in France, T H Smith says
:
It may be useful in case any of the boys fancy the kilt. We were
busy on one occasion making a dugout, and had a small winch for
hauling out the sandbags of earth up a chute composed of rough
boards. Jerry dropped one shell just at the opening, and six kilties
did a dive down the chute, and have since wished they had enlisted
in a trousered regiment.
