Harrogate Herald - 25th December 1918
W H Breare letter
Private Vernon Smith, 2/6th West Yorks, son of Mr and
Mrs Smith, Station Parade, who was wounded in hands and leg,
gave me a call on Monday. He has been in hospital at Bristol for
some time, and is home on ten days' leave. He joined up in July,
1917, went to France in November, 1917, and through the fighting on
the Marne, the Somme, and Cambrai without a scratch, but, as Tommy
says, "stopped one" in October. He is going on very well,
and returns to Bristol on the 30th. He was a Lewis gunner. Tait,
of Leeds, who was in his lot, was killed.
