Harrogate Herald - 9th January 1918
W H Breare letter
I am glad to say I am getting quite a number of names of heroes
of Mons. One of the latest called on me, Corporal Thomas Askew,
who, of course, is a regular, in the 13th King's Own Hussars, and of
26 Mount Street, Oatlands Mount, Harrogate. He is a son of Mr and
Mrs Harry Askew. His father has just been discharged from the
Army through ill-health, after two years' service. The father, five
sons, and a son-in-law are serving. I call this a patriotic family!.
Two brothers are also entitled to the 1914 Star. Their names are Private
Arthur Askew, missing since 3rd May, Private Watson Askew,
who is in Mesopotamia. There is another brother and a brother-in-law
in France as well. Corporal Askew was invalided home and sent
to his reserve regiment in Ireland, where he is now stationed. Corporal
Topham, who used to drive the station bus, is with Corporal
Askew in Ireland.
