Harrogate Herald - 10th October 1917
Roll of Honour
Lance Corporal Thomas Dobson (Northumberland Fusiliers) was
killed in action on September 20th. He resided at 21 Unity Grove,
Harrogate, and leaves a wife and one boy. Before joining he was head
cellarman at the Hotel Majestic. Their Majesties' sympathy
accompanied the notification. The chaplain, in a letter to Mrs
Dobson, says he was killed by a sniper's bullet during the attack on
September 10th, and died instantaneously. "It would be
impossible to exaggerate the courage and endurance shown by our men
that day, and we honour those who are fallen, and grieve for their
loss". He assures her of the battalion's hearty sympathy. Private
A F Turner, who sent a photo of the deceased and some of his
comrades taken before going into action, says Dobson "was a
great favourite", and conveys the deepest sympathy of the men
of the platoon. The platoon officer also adds his condolence, and
says he "keenly feels the loss of such a brave boy".
