The death took place in a southern hospital on
Friday, after an accident, of Lieutenant Alexander Ivan Ward,
MBE, Army Dental Corps, sixth son of the late Dr W J C Ward,
a former Medical Officer of Health for Harrogate, and Mrs Ward.
Mr Ward served in the last war with the Durham Light
Infantry, which he joined in 1914. he saw service in the Ypres
Salient, and was severely wounded in the first battle of the Somme.
He was mentioned in despatches and was awarded the MBE and promoted
to captain. He rejoined the Army early in 1940 and, after serving
for a year with the ground forces attached to an aerodrome, was
transferred to the Army Dental Corps. He was for many years in
practice as a dentist in Harrogate and was well known.
