Harrogate Herald - 7th November 1917
Roll of Honour
Clifford Wheeler, of 6 West Lea Avenue, Harlow Hill,
Harrogate, has been killed in action on October 9th. He was the son
of Mr & Mrs Wheeler, of he above address. The sad news
was conveyed in a letter from the deceased's brother, in which he
says :
I, by good fortune, was left behind. During the advance poor Cliff
was sniped in the head, so that death was instantaneous. The last
time I saw him was Sunday night, and he was very cheerful and in the
best of spirits. Fred Pattison was with him and tried to find him
after he was killed, but they were shelling very heavily at the
time".
The deceased joined the Yorks Hussars on March 11th, 1915, and
went to France in July, 1916, attached to the 9th West Yorks Regt.
He was a great favourite with the officers of his old regiment and
spoke in glowing terms of them, being officer's servant and
receiving many presents. Had he remained with them his mother would
undoubtedly have received letters of consolation from his officers,
but was little known in his new unit. Deceased was of fine physique
and played cricket with Pannal Ash Club. It is hoped the other son
will come safely home. Private Clifford Wheeler was employed
with Mr Stringer, shoemaker, Harlow Hill, up to joining the Army.
