Harrogate Herald - 1st August 1917
Letters
Private S Young says : I like to read your
letter which you insert every week. One can fair imagine being in
Harrogate in reality. We are now in a comparative rough part of the
line, and artillery "strafes" are an absolute revelation,
and some exciting times seem to be in store. Activity is prevalent
all along the line, judging by the racket which is going on. Maybe
we will have a reputation of the Somme of last year, which acts as a
gentle reminder. The Germans have a slight tendency of sniping one
with a few batteries occasionally (so unhealthy, you know). Yes, and
we send some back so nicely; I like to hear them go "plonk"
right over. Then you can hear the boys say - "That's the stuff
to give them". Of course, he is playing too, so we have to give
a bit and bob down; "heads down, but hearts up". I am
writing this letter in the trenches, where we are likely to be for a
few days.
