The Story of a Hospital
By Wilfrid Edgecombe, M.D., F.R.C.P., F.R.C.S.
The history of the Harrogate and District General
Hospital
An "iron lung"
The hospital was a recipient of an "iron lung" among those
distributed throughout the country through the munificence of Lord
Nuffield. It was delivered by air by courtesy of the RAF, and has
remained in occasional use ever since and has been loaned from time
to to time to other hospitals for urgent need.
A portrait of HRH Princess Mary, the patron of the hospital, was
hung in the board room together with a crayon drawing done by Miss
Ayres of the president, Captain C S Greenwood, and Mr Herbert
Frankling, senior surgeon. Later were added portraits of prominent
members of the board of management - Mr G G Stephenson, Mr C D'Oyly
Grange, Dr W Edgecombe, Major Whitworth and Mr George Chapman -
these in commemoration of the "voluntary" days. Since the takeover
by the National Health Service; none have been added.
