The history of the Harrogate and District General
Hospital
A fire
In 1954 an alarming fire occurred in the Pathological Department,
caused by the upsetting and falling to the floor of a bottle of
ether. The fire brigade soon arrived and extinguished the flames.
The damage was fortunately confined to one room. The cost of repair
amounted to £321.
By the kindness of the chairman of the House Committee an aerial
photograph was taken of the Hospital. An enlargement was made and
framed, and hung in the Board Room. Five hundred reproductions in
postcard size were made and distributed to the staff and patients.
The year 1955 saw the resignation of the Hospital secretary, Mr H
C Goss, after seven years' service. In his place Mr A Lister, from
the Regional Board, was appointed.
The consultant surgeons having repeatedly stressed the need for
alterations in the operating theatres to adapt them to modern
requirements, numerous committee meetings were held in conjunction
with the architect to the Regional Board and the necessary plans
have been drawn up. So far, however, no start has yet been made with
the work.
