South Chapel
In this apsidal chapel, which is best viewed from the organ loft and
from where there is also a beautiful side view of the sanctuary, the
seven lancet windows are eventually to depict the Seven Sacraments.
Beginning from the left, they are :
1 - Holy Baptism, the gift of G.A.E. and O.F.B.
2 - Confirmation, in memory of Edith Goodrick
3 - Penance, in memory of George Goodrick, Churchwarden
4 - The Eucharist, in memory of Sylvester Reed Hodgson
5 - Holy Orders, in memory of George Henry Lazenby
6 and 7 - Holy Matrimony and Holy Unction are awaiting donors.
This group, even though unfinished, is very fine with its jewel-like
effect, produced by many small medallions, cunningly varied and
joined.
The Cross and candlesticks for this Altar were given by Mrs. Hefford
Ainley in 1928.
The War Shrine to the left of the Communion Rail, the gift of Mrs.
Skelton (later Mrs. Allsup) in memory of her husband, forms a
beautiful memorial of the gallant men who fell in the 1914-1918 war.
It is a triptych, the centre of which contains a picture of S.
Michael, the guardian of the Holy Souls, slaying the dragon, and is
symbolical of the destruction of evil. A replica of it is to be seen
in the church of East Preston, Sussex. A silver-gilt and jewelled
chalice was provided by the relations of those whose names are on
the triptych.
